Cavitation is one of the most common pump headaches, causing significant damage to components. The best way to reduce the costs associated with cavitation is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Wear rings made from Vespel® CR-6100 can significantly reduce pump cavitation.
What is Vespel® CR-6100?
Vespel® CR-6100 is a composite material that can be used for a broad range of applications. Made from long carbon fibers and from Teflon® PFA resin, Vespel® CR-6100 resists temperatures as low as -238 F and as high as 500 F (-200 C to 260 C). It is also chemically compatible with almost all fluids. Vespel® CR-6100 parts are easy to machine and install, offering a simple, cost-effective solution for reducing pump cavitation.
How Vespel® CR-6100 Reduces Pump Cavitation
Vespel® CR-6100 wear rings allow you to run your pump with reduced wear ring clearance. This reduces the leakage from the discharge of the pump back into the suction. This small change reduces flow disruptions at the suction inlet and lowers the NPSHR (net positive suction head required) for a pump; therefore, the risk of cavitation is reduced.
What to do for Reducing Pump Cavitation with Vespel® CR-6100:
- Replace the stationary wear rings with Vespel® CR-6100
- Continue using metal rotating wear rings
- Reduce the wear ring clearance to 50% of the API recommended minimum
Benefits of DuPont™ Vespel® CR-6100 to Reduce Pump Cavitation
- Lower NPSHR
- Less recirculation of discharge fluid back into pump suction—less flow disruption at pump suction
- Improved efficiency
- Improved rotor stability
- Lower vibrations
